The army’s leaders are trying to deal with racism but it’s still a common experience for many.

In 2020, 1 in 7 of British soldiers was black, Asian or other ethnic minority (BAME).
In that year 1 in 20 soldiers said they’d been unfairly treated because of their racial background in the last year.
So, roughly one in three BAME soldiers believes they get treated unfairly because of the colour of their skin.
BAME soldiers are twice as likely as white soldiers to make a formal complaint about unfair treatment.
